Following our initial support, Tom is progressing well and had been invited to attend the English Boxing Elite camp.
Training at the camp went well and Tom’s team have strong hopes he will become part of the England main squad.
Like all journeys there is always further to go. The plan is for Tom to challenge in April for the National Title.
The Championships are the flagship competition within the UK. During the competition the boxers reaching the top 2 in the finals (for their weight categories – Tom being 91KG), automatically represent England in the year ahead. This gives the boxer the chance to wear the England vest and box internationally with the much needed training and support of the England team.
Tom has reached the quarters for the last two years and drawn with the No1 seed who later became Champion that year and went on to box in the European and world tournaments. The top 3 seeds only enter the competition in the quarters. Tom is currently seeded No4, therefore must box through the stages, i.e East Midlands, Midlands North v South and then the quarters.
Tom is 22 years old with previous champions aging between 20 and 24, so Tom is more than ready.
Tom’steam are confident that with the right build up an going through the training camp he will reach his goal in the finals. They have already jumped the ladder in being invited to attend the England camp but have yet to secure a vest/tournament to represent England.
The funds provided by the Trust have been a fantastic source of support in helping on the path to realise his dream, with extra funds being awarded to fund the trips to the training camp so that he can give it his best shot.
Once on the Elite Squads there is also a chance to represent GB and a fully funded training pathway.
